How to Remove the EGR on a Mercedes 300D
1. Locate the EGR valve of the Mercedes 300D in the back of the engine on the drivers side of the engine compartment. The EGR valve is a circular metal device with a vacuum hose attached to the top of the valve.
2. Remove the vacuum hose from the top of the EGR valve by hand and set it out of the way.
3. Unfasten the two bolts on the sides of the EGR valve with a socket wrench that secures the part to the engine.
4. Remove the EGR valve from the Mercedes 300D engine compartment.

The main function of the EGR removal or the exhaust gas recirculation valve is to reduce oxidation of nitrogen through the reduction of combustion temperature. The combustion temperature can only be reduced when the EGR valves send some of the exhaust gas through the intake manifold back into the cylinders. When the combustion temperature is very hot, there is a reaction between nitrogen and two other byproducts, and this process forms nitrogen oxide. When this nitrogen oxide is released into the atmosphere, it mixes with oxygen and becomes nitrogen dioxide. When nitrogen dioxide combines with other compounds like hydrocarbons in the presence of sunlight, smog is formed that is basically a pollutant.
